Re: She didn't destroy MD athletics. 20 NCAA Championships is remarkable.
Destroyed is far too harsh a word, however, she left a mess and not many, if any, fans at Maryland. You are a very good poster on this board and usually dead on the facts so I must ask where your numbers come from? According to a number of articles in the Washington Post from 2009 through 2015 that have chronicled the financial mess at Maryland there has never been a mention of the debt reduction you speak of and, moreover, annual operating losses have been subsidized by the university. Yow's handling of football and basketball drove away numerous donors which contributed to the problems. When she left in 2010 according to the Washington Post, there was a cumulative $64 million dollar operating deficit over her tenure in the non-rev sports and substantial debt tied to capital facilities. Being upside/down forced her successor to cut sports and the school to eventually look to the Big Ten in hopes of increasing revenue. UMCP continued to run in the red after her departure and the most recent profile in the Post alluded to the fact that with full Big Ten shares they are projected to be running in the black around 2020. The national championships are nice, VT needs to start winning some, and a sign the athletic program has not been destroyed at UMCP but, they are still digging out of a whole that Yow at least played a part in creating.
